Recommendations for a good herbal/vitamin shop?

I’m trying to gently embrace alternative therapies, and am looking into taking some vitamin or herbal supplements for certain things. However, I remain a bit skeptical as well as unsure how good the products places like Holland and Barret stock. Does anyone know a good herbal remedy/vitamin shop, preferably in London but possibly online, that stocks decent quality products?
(and yes, I know that a lot of herbal/supplement stuff is a swizz, but do believe there can be one or two worthy things out there).
(and no, I’m not talking about drugs, either).

G. Baldwins on the Walworth Road SE17 is a herbalist that has been around for years. They also have their own website that I think you can order from.

And they do excellent Sarsparilla. Or in central london you could try the Neal’s Yard Apothecary in Neal’s Yard. They’ve got loads of herbs and people on hand to offer advice.

There’s a nice place in Hampstead Heath, almost opposite the station.

Another vote for Baldwins, the website is www.baldwins.co.uk – it’s sort of divided into two shops, the one on the left is the modern health foody stuff, the one on the right is the old fashioned herbalist stuff (and sarsparilla by the glass). They have these cool engraved glass panels running round the top of the counter offering things like powders, patent medicines and leeches.

Xynergy – www.xynergy.co.uk is a very good online shop – they’ve been around for 20 odd years so they know their stuff (not online obv) and you can speak to humans if you prefer to order by phone.

There’s a new one that’s opened on Stroud Green Road in Finsbury Park. They have a decent selection of teas, essential oils and homeopathic remedies, but it’s new and I’m no expert on natural remedies. However, it’s useful if you live in the area! :)

Thanks everyone for your recommendations – a visit to Neal’s Yard has seen me with some little glass bottles full of mysterious stuff. It’s a brave new world.
