Tesco - the greatest company at work today or cynical, manipulative force for evil?

I’ve just noticed their adverts on here and their sheer nerve is both appalling and awe-inspiring.
Picture the scene at their Cheshunt HQ:
“OK, so we’re still doing well flogging people the pies and lard. However, they’re getting so fat that they can’t waddle to our shops without having a major coronary. We’ve kept a lot of them thanks to the internet and catalogue channels, so they don’t even have to leave the house. But we’re not getting enough of their disposable spend. Let’s have a thought shower, people.”
“How about slimming clubs?”
“Promising. Go on…”
“Well, the slimming plan will encourage them to try lower-fat food. Not simple, cheap stuff like apples but the higher-margin stuff like our ready meals. Once they’ve lost the weight, they come off the plan and put the weight back on. It’s a virtuous circle. For us.”
“Brilliant. I want it ready for launch in time for post-Christmas.”
Part of me thinks that they are one of the greatest companies at work today. Part thinks they are cynical, manipulative force for evil and a symptom of a wider malaise. That is all.
