What is the difference between a Tesco Metro and a Tesco Express?

Express stores are up to 3,000 sq ft, and tend to be in smaller towns….

Tesco Metro stores are between 7,000-15,000 sq ft, and in larger town and city centre locations, with a larger product range than Express stores.

@Willster, I was thinking about this question the other day. I was in the big Tesco Express in Hull, it’s huge, just googled it and it’s around 10000. I couldn’t work out why they called it an Express as it’s obviously not, easy to get lost in and hard to find products. I’m not really sure why I care about this, I was just pondering.

I believe the five Tesco Express stores local to my area were built on garage forecourts or within small parades of shops for convenience’s sake. However, they are far and away overshadowed by the newer 100,000 sq ft Tesco store – which I believe was built just to make townsfolk sigh even more loudly about sunny Slough than before…

It seems the biggest ones are not called Metros or Expresses I blame it all on the Olympics

Actually, the big Hull Tesco is called a Tesco Extra, not express. I read it wrong the other day. Google put me right when I actually read it properly.

In recent years Morrisons bought our local Safeway, decided it was a no-goer and sold it to Sainsbury. I’d say at least 75% of the staff (working mothers with school-aged children) have continued loyal employment there throughout these changes.
